Building is such an awesome (and covetable) skill.

The more and more immersed into my current marketing role I get – the more I realize how awesome the ability to build (something, anything) really is. Whether it’s a quick ad via Photoshop or Illustrator, adding an iframe Facebook tab or putting up a simple landing page – it’s pretty sweet to be able to just do it yourself and not rely on designers, developers, copy-writers, copy-editors,etc, etc.  That’s why I love Ladies Learning Code so much. It’s empowering (and teaching) women basic, beginner friendly technical skills so they can become builders and not just consumers of the web.

So, let’s get excited and make things!

Everyone Learning Code

Today was a great day in the world of Ladies Learning Code and empowering individuals to be builders and not just consumers of technology and here’s why:

1. With Programs Like Codecademy, Women Are No Longer Accidentally Excluded From Learning Technology

2. Codecademy Joins the White House to train low-income youth to build innovative apps.

3. Girls Learning Code March Break camp announced in Toronto for Girls in grades 6,7 & 8 brought to you by Ladies Learning Code

Hello world!

Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start blogging!

I think this post is actually pretty fitting. When I was 12 and my family purchased our first computer, I used to spend  my evenings and summers coding a Harry Potter fan site on GeoCities (ah, good memories) by trial and error and with the help of Lissa Explains. I started high school, where computer science was not promoted or encouraged (especially for girls), and lost touch with everything computer programming. I went on to graduate from the Richard Ivey School of Business and since my first startup in university, I’ve realized what an advantage a technical skill set would bring. Learning to code has always been somewhat of a distant memory for me but I’ve always dreamed of a group for women that makes coding accessible to complete beginners. In comes Ladies Learning Code - a Toronto based not-for-profit that’s empowering women to be builders not just consumers of technology. As an organizer – I’m thrilled at the opportunities it presents and the second chance for me to learn to code! I’ve redirected my domain forwarding from about.me to this WordPress blog as the first step and a sign of commitment to doing this! Doing this = learning to code. Watch it grow and evolve as I dabble, experiment and learn.
